AmCham expresses its concern regarding one-time financial support measures

Prishtina, May 22, 2026 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Kosovo expresses concern regarding the increasing reliance on one-time financial support measures as a response to economic challenges and inflationary pressures. While supporting vulnerable categories and protecting citizens’ purchasing power is an important objective, temporary cash transfers provide only short-term relief and do not address the structural factors necessary for sustainable economic development.

AmCham strongly believes that measures focused primarily on stimulating short-term consumption risk producing limited long-term economic impact, particularly in an economy such as Kosovo’s, where a significant portion of increased consumer spending translates into higher imports rather than increased domestic production and investment. Such interventions also divert public resources away from initiatives capable of creating broader and more durable economic benefits.

Rather than prioritizing temporary one-off payments, greater focus should be placed on investments in infrastructure and policies that strengthen the private sector ecosystem. Strategic investments in transport, energy, digital infrastructure, education, and workforce development create conditions that enable businesses to expand operations and increase productivity.

Strengthening the private sector has a broader and more sustainable impact on society. A more competitive and growing private sector generates new employment opportunities, increases wages over time, and creates incentives for improving working conditions and investing in employee development. Economic growth driven by productive investment ultimately provides stronger and more lasting benefits than temporary consumption measures.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Kosovo reiterates that sustainable prosperity is achieved through policies that strengthen economic foundations, improve competitiveness, and create an environment in which businesses can grow and citizens can benefit from stable employment and better living standards.
