Prishtina, June 17, 2026 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Kosovo hosted a presentation by Dr. Perry N. Wood, Executive Director of the Erie County Gaming Revenue Authority (ECGRA), titled “Investing in Advanced Industries and Manufacturing.”
Drawing on Erie County’s experience in economic transformation, Dr. Wood explored how strategic investments in advanced industries, innovation ecosystems, workforce development, and entrepreneurship can strengthen regional competitiveness and create long-term economic opportunities.
The presentation highlighted the role of advanced industries as key drivers of economic growth, characterized by high levels of research and development and strong demand for STEM talent. While traditional manufacturing remains an important foundation of regional economies, sustained growth increasingly depends on innovation, technology adoption, and the development of a skilled workforce.
A significant portion of the discussion focused on building a strong talent pipeline through investments in education, career and technical training, apprenticeships, and community colleges. Dr. Wood underscored the importance of ensuring that individuals are equipped with the skills required to succeed in evolving industries and that economic opportunity remains accessible across communities.
Participants also learned about Erie County’s efforts to support entrepreneurship and innovation through targeted investments in research facilities, startup accelerators, venture funding mechanisms, maker spaces, and partnerships between industry, academia, and public institutions. These initiatives have contributed to the development of a more diversified and resilient economy capable of adapting to changing market conditions.
Participants reflected on the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and the need for institutions and businesses to adapt accordingly. Discussions highlighted that AI is not only transforming systems and processes but also reshaping organizational culture. Challenges were noted in integrating AI into traditional sectors such as steel production, alongside the importance of strengthening collaboration with universities to advance research and development. Participants also emphasized the potential role of community colleges in supporting workforce education and fostering closer industry–academia cooperation.
Addressing future opportunities, Dr. Wood emphasized the need to expand access to capital, strengthen regional collaboration, and advocate for policies that support innovation and advanced manufacturing. He noted that long-term economic success depends on sustained investments in people, infrastructure, and the broader ecosystem that enables businesses and entrepreneurs to thrive.
The session concluded with a discussion on the importance of leadership and collaboration in driving economic transformation, highlighting how communities can leverage their existing strengths while embracing innovation to build a more competitive and prosperous future.
